Summary – From Goodreads

Seventeen-year-old Shawnahur longs to be more—to do more—than just herd wooly ducks. If that means he can make his brothers proud of him, all the better. He doesn’t think much of it when he helps a wounded dragon, but suddenly, he’s gaining attention.

First the chief’s mage shows up declaring Shawnahur dragon king of a nonexistent kingdom. Then he receives a summons from the chief’s household to be the chief’s personal musician, which shows him a side of the warrior he’d never expected.

With the clans united against a common enemy, Shawnahur’s brothers march to war. When Shawn takes supplies to his brothers, he unwittingly walks into a battlefield, and with his dragon’s help, defeats the champion.

As Shawnahur’s successes mount, the chief’s approval turns to jealousy. Shawn soon finds himself on the wrong end of a glaive more times than he can count. Now he only longs to stay alive; pleasing his brothers and herding would be a life of ease.

My Review

I have read all the books so far in this series and this was one of my favorites.  The previous books followed the story of other characters.  This book we got to meet all new characters in the same lands of the previous books.  I loved this book and how the characters developed over time.  It is full of action with a bit of romance.

Shawahur aka Shawn is a seventeen year old boy that is the youngest in his family.  Most of his brothers are all part of the Muintir army and come home to tell war stories from the battlefield.  Shawn just wants to be like them and wants his brothers to see him for who he is and not just their little brother.  Most of his days are spent herding the wooly ducks aka the pucklings, playing his flute and writing songs.  One day while out with the ducks he discovers a small dragon that is wounded and needs his help.  He doesn't think much of it until the dragon starts speaking to him.  His life starts to change from there.  It's not long before the two become friends, create a bond and are pretty much inseparable.  Then Chief Rian’s mage shows up and tells Shawn that he will become the dragon king.  He also sends him to play his flute for Chief Rian.  Once he returns home his father sends him to find his brothers and take them some supplies.  It's here that he gets mixed up with some things on the battlefield and along with his dragon, Keenah he defeats the enemy's champion.  Things start to really change from here on out for Shawn.  He makes new friends and even finds some romance along the way.  But as with war things don't always go as planned.  He faces a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns along the way.

I really enjoyed the characters in this installment.  I liked Shawn, Durrow, Carda, Ash and the other friends that he made throughout the story.  I would love to know what the Cormac the duck was thinking every time that Shawn went to look for him.  It made me laugh.  There is a lot of action, suspense and some romance.  There are also times that the story will pull at your heartstrings.  I liked that Shawn wasn’t just another solider but that he showed compassion for the Hameen and their families.  Overall a great book and I would recommend reading it to others who enjoy fantasy books.  This e-arc was provided to me for review.  This did not affect my review in any way.
